Abstract

Nurses, in providing nursing care, must uphold patients' rights. In several health law references, one of the key rights of patients is the right to information and informed consent. Informed consent is typically provided prior to surgical procedures (preoperative) and aims to reduce patients’ anxiety levels. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between informed consent and anxiety levels in preoperative orthopedic surgery patients at RSUD dr. Zainoel Abidin, Aceh Government Hospital. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in January 2023. The sample consisted of 79 respondent selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire with structured interview techniques administered directly to patients who were about to undergo orthopedic surgery. Results: The results showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant relationship between informed consent and anxiety levels in preoperative patients. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the provision of informed consent and anxiety in preoperative orthopedic surgery patients. Proper delivery of informed consent can help reduce patient anxiety. Suggestions: Healthcare providers should emphasize two-way communication when delivering informed consent to better understand patients’ information needs and reduce anxiety levels. Additionally, informed consent procedures should be carried out in accordance with the hospital’s standard operating procedures
